Sporting Programs

Foundation to Year 2

P.E classes in Foundation, years 1 and 2 focus on the fundamental motor skills (FMS). These skills are taught through dance, gymnastics, relays, and skill stations. To prepare for team sports students begin to play chasing games with basic rules that promote fair play and cooperation. Once mastered, the FMS will help students develop control over their bodies when changing speed, direction and level while playing modified team sport games. 

All students are provided with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sporting programs including Swimming, Athletics and various team Sports.  Students from grades 3 onwards begin to participate in district carnivals and in grade 6 interschool sports are available.

Athletics Sports (Grades 3-6)

Students have the opportunity to represent the school in the district athletics carnival and the district cross country competition.

Grade 6 Team Sports

Ivanhoe Primary School is a member of the Ivanhoe district school sports association which runs both Summer and Winter sports competitions for senior students in terms 2 and 3. There are also round robin tournaments in terms 1 and 4.

Summer Sports

Interschool sport choices include Bat tennis, Softball, Volleyball and Cricket.

As a Sunsmart School summer fixtures are played in the mornings.

Winter Sports

Interschool sport choices include football, netball and Fully loaded softball.

Swimming Program

All students are provided with the opportunity to participate in an intensive swimming program conducted at the Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre. Swimming lessons are conducted by trained swimming instructors provided by the Aquatic Centre.

  • Term 1 - Grade 1/2
  • Term 2 - Grade 3/4
  • Term 3 - Grade 5/6
  • Term 4 - Foundation

Children in grades 3 to 6 also have the opportunity to participate in the District Swimming Carnival.

Music Programs

While Music is a Specialist class enjoyed by all students for 1hr a week there are also many opportunities for students to be involved in additional music programs.

Ivanhoe Primary School is well known for its music program catering for all students through a combination of our Specialist Classes (1hr per week for all students) and additional opportunities to be involved in a broad array of music experiences.

Our wonderful parents group the Friends of Music (FoM) provide additional support including helping to run some of our events and to produce our music brochure.

Camping Program

Ivanhoe Primary School’s camping program aims to assist students to develop levels of independence appropriate for their age group and to experience a range of educational activities. Children have the opportunity to experience food and accommodation in a caring environment away from their families.

Grade 3 & 4

A biannual 2 night / three day camp at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat with their teachers and parent volunteers - odd numbered year.

Grade 5

4 night / 5 day adventure camp at Camp Coonawarra in Gippsland with teachers and parent volunteers (odd years)

Grade 6

4 night / 5 day tour to Australia's capital city, Canberra, with teachers and parent volunteers (even years)

Chess Club

Boys and girls in Prep to Grade 6 have the opportunity to enrol in a before school chess club.  Chess club is held in designated classrooms from 8.00am to 8.55am with Tuition provided by qualified chess masters.  Beginners to Advanced group tuition is available and intra-school and inter-school competitions are held throughout the year.

Junior School Council & Environmental Leaders

Students have the opportunity to develop leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and have empowerment in the decision making process of Ivanhoe Primary School.  Each year there are a total of 6 leadership positions elected within a class, 4 as Junior School Councillors and 2 as Environmental Leaders.  Students elected in previous years are generally not eligible for re-election.

The Junior School Council (JSC) is comprised of a girl and boy elected from each grade 1 to 6 class (changing each Semester).  The JSC meets with the Principal and the Assistant Principal once a fortnight where they can present and discuss issues, ideas or suggestions.

JSC activities can include:

  • Organising casual or fancy dress days to raise funds for charities
  • Acting as school tour guides for prospective parents
  • Contributing ideas for inclusion on the school projects list
  • Presenting Star of the Week certificates at Monday morning assembly
  • Assisting with the running of the annual student disco
  • Representing the students at any official presentation

Each semester there is a single Environmental Leader from each class in grades 1 to 6 (each class will have a boy in one semester and a girl in the other).

Environmental Leaders are involved in healthy lifestyle activities like our Ride to School and Nude Food programs.

Ivanhoe Primary has a School House system with our 'Houses' named after significant people from our area.
